300 Delegates Attend Rheumatology Conference at KIMS Hospitals
Hyderabad, 1st July 2018: The Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, KIMS Hospitals, along with Rheumatology Association Hyderabad Chapter, jointly organized a Clinical Rheumatology Workshop at KIMS hospitals, Secunderabad, on the 1st of July 2018. This day long workshop was the 5th edition and is conducted annually. It was aimed at raising medical and public awareness on the topic, while stressing the need for Rheumatology teaching centers in the country.
Padmashri Prof. Dr. Kakarla Subbarao, Chairman, KIMS Foundation and Research Center, was the chief guest, and Dr Bhaskar Rao, MD & CEO, KIMS Hospitals, was the patron for the CME. They stressed on how the number of Rheumatologists practicing in India is strikingly inadequate to meet the health and medical care requirements of the community. Dr. Bhaskar Rao lamented that there are only 15 teaching hospitals where Rheumatology post graduate services are available in all of India. In Telangana, only NIMS and KIMS have a Rheumatology PG course, whereas Andhra Pradesh has no such course in any of their teaching hospitals.
The event involved faculty examining patients in an interactive workshop. The participant doctors were trained on the ways to recognize varied Rheumatological manifestations and diagnosing common conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Ankylosing spondylitis, Psoriatic arthritis, Juvenile arthritis, Gout, Vasculitis, Myositis and Scleroderma.
Dr. Sarath Chandra Mouli, Clinical Director, Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology KIMS Hospitals, said, “Arthritis patients can lead normal life with new therapies available in the market. There are some new class of drugs called biologics like Remicade, Enbrel, Tocilizumab, Rituximab and small molecules like Tofacitinib and Baricitinib changed the therapeutic landscape of arthritic conditions and dramatically changed disease outcomes positively.”
More than 300 delegates, including general practitioners, physicians, orthopaedics, medical officers and post graduates from various medical colleges from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, attended the workshop. It was well received, with prompt explanations by the faculty, and information on positive results of new drugs for arthritis patients.
